New readers, pull up a stool and start here
The who, the what, the why, and the how of The Glass
Are you the friend in your group who knows all the hot new bars?
Do you always bring the best bottle to a party?
Perhaps that’s not you. Perhaps you’d like it to be.
Let me tell you what’s going on in here.
I’m Anthony, a full-time drinks writer by trade, and you’ve landed on The Glass, my occasional boozeletter on drinks you’ll want to tell your friends about.
The Glass is about alcohol but it’s not about getting drunk. Instead it’s about drinking for flavour and finding the right drink to make any occasion that little bit more special.
I write posts about once a month. Paid supporters can see the full archive and get extra goodies too: tasting notes, recommendations for specific brands to use with cocktail recipes, that sort of thing.
Why should you care what I have to say about drinks? Here are three reasons. I think they’re pretty compelling.
Writing about drinks is my day job, but it wasn’t always. I switched to this career back in 2018, and just four years later was named the UK’s drinks writer of the year.
I wrote a book on gin. People reckon it’s good. I have more books in the pipeline.
I’ve had a bunch of high-level drinks industry training and am always keen to learn more. (Next on my list: Saké.)
What to expect
Original writing on spirits, cocktails, bars, beer and cider. Plus occasional out-takes and behind-the-scenes material from my writing life.
What you won’t get
Wine. There are already too many people writing too well on the subject for me to stick my oar in.
Also, I like to keep wine as my off-duty drink. I never need to know anything about it other than “do I like this wine in my glass” and “do I want another”.
Works for me.
